ARE OUR CV REALLY REACHING THE EMPLOYERS???

How reliable is the job of recruiting agencies nowadays???

The recruitment agency business model is grotesquely dysfunctional.  looks also same system for the talent acquisition managers working for the big names......

It is broken.Yes. It. Is.Certainly for permanent recruitment.

We are just so used to it, have it so imbued in our psyche, that we don’t appreciated how farcical and damaging it is.

For everybody but benefit no-one.

Clients, naively thinking they get a better service because they get agencies to compete, actually get a far worse service because they are actively encouraging recruiters to work on speed, instead of quality.


Recruiters suffer because even if we want to,  and in the end we only fill one out of five jobs, if we are lucky, destroying profit in many cases, and the careers of recruiters too, who simply burn out, chasing rainbows.

And, the often ignored fact, candidates suffer the most because they do not get service or due care from third party recruiters, who are too busy chasing mythical job orders in competition with five other recruiters, to actually focus on the candidates needs. That’s right. If recruitment worked like accountants, or lawyers, or doctors, or even real estate agents, where the service provider is not working on each case in competition… our recruiters would work on 20% of the orders they currently do, but fill 300% more! And who would benefit the most? Candidates! Yes candidates, who would no longer be treated like cattle, but rather like crucial partners as they should.

No wonder candidates are increasingly avoiding job-boards, and recruiters, and transferring their job search energy to web-searching, social media, and other tactics.

Yes, that’s a screwed system all right.But it is getting worse as recruitment evolves


WHY ALWAYS THE SAME RECRUITING AGENCIES OR TECHNICAL OFFICE ARE GETTING THE CONTRACTS WITH THE NEW PROJECTS??? IT IS A MONOPOLY BEHIND THIS BECAUSE IN COMPANIES ARE ROTATING ALWAYS THE SAME FACES???


The majority of recruiters access only a tiny percentage of the good candidates, and what’s more, secure only a fraction of the clients’ commitment to filling the job.

What other professional would deal with the customers on such a flimsy premise? Who else would invest the time and resources, that we recruiters do, on the tiny off-chance that a fee might be generated? But it gets a lot worse.

Not only do most recruiters run their businesses on the same basis as someone playing a lottery, they do it in  competition with five other agencies. This is ridiculous. Some very significant recruitment companies with massive turnover, still can’t make any profit because such a huge percentage of their staff time is spent on fruitless work that results in no return. In fact many such businesses are now going bust. Their cost base is too high for their income generation ability. And this is why! Their business model is screwed.

And it’s a vicious cycle of discontent. Clients get increasingly irritated because they are dealing with low-level recruiters, who don’t do a thorough job. Ironically the fault for this lies with the client, who asks recruiters to compete on the same job, thereby dumbing down the process. Recruiters get disillusioned, desperate, burnt-out and take shortcuts, which continues the cycle. And of course worst of all, candidates suffer.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. In the chart above lies tremendous opportunity, if you look for it. The prize goes to the recruiter who can develop strategies to access those candidates in the segment of the circle that are not active. The skill of bringing top hidden talent, that clients can’t find themselves, to the hiring table. That is the Nirvana we should all be seeking.


That is where the fun and the money is. And of course those recruiters who can blend technology with the craft of recruitent and who can secure a greater percentage of the clients commitment, via retainers, exclusivity, or other partnership arrangements, will differentiate right now, and into the future.

So, the winners will be those recruiters who recognise that the way we work now is terminally dysfunctional, and who act to access the parts of my circles that most recruiters do not.


Many unwary contractors, and even some very wary ones, have been caught out by some very devious agency tricks. To be forewarned is to be forearmed though. Here are ten agency tricks that you should look out for.

1. They phone you up saying that they have several jobs that you are suitable for. They need you, however, first to supply them with references. Is this true? No, it isn't. They do not have any jobs for you. They are just trying to find out people who take on contractors and want to know the names and phone numbers of your old bosses.

2. They'll say, "Who did you work for at BT. Was it Pinco Pallino"? "No", you say. "It was Mickey Mouse". Now the agent has a contact at your old firm that they can call up to ask him if he is looking for any contractors.

3. They post jobs on job boards that don't exist. They are only trying to get themselves a number of extra CVs to increase their own database. When you send in your CV, they'll say that the job is gone.

4. They'll ask you, "Tell us what companies that your CV has already been sent out to, so that we don't make the mistake of sending your CV there again, which could cost you a job interview". If you tell them, then they now know what companies are looking for contractors, and they can then put some other candidates up in opposition to you. Don't think they wouldn't.

5. When they are asking you what your rate for the job is they might say, "What's your bottom line? What's the least that you would take to get a job? Obviously we will try to get as much as we can for you". No they won't. Your bottom line now becomes the most you'll get for any job. They'll still try and get as much as they can from the client, but they'll keep any extra they can get for themselves. How many people have actually heard from an agent "We've managed to get you a higher rate than you were asking for?"

6. They'll put a clause in your contract that they and the client company can terminate you with a month's (or a week's) notice, but that you have no notice period with them.

7. If you get a job interview through them, they'll tell you that they'll call you back when they have any news. What they mean is that if there is good news, they will be on the line pronto to try and get you to sign up straight away in case you take another job. If it's bad news, they won't call you, and they'll be 'not around' when you call in. They'll give you the bad news eventually but only after several attempts to get hold of them.

8. When you don't get the job for an interview that they sent you to, they'll say they'll look for other jobs for you, but they won't. They'll quietly drop you. They don't like people who don't pass interviews for them.

9. They tell you that if you introduce them to another contractor that they get a job for, they'll pay you 250 or 500 quid. They will if you find out about it. They won't contact you, unless you call up asking for it. If they get this person a job three months down the line or a couple of years down the line, there's no chance at all of them sending you a cheque out of the blue, even though the finder's name (your's) will be on their database.

10. Once they've got you a job, they may say that they weren't able to get you the rate that you wanted – that the client will only pay 5% or 10% less. This is rubbish. They told the company what your rate was initially and the company accepted it. The agency are now just trying to help themselves to an extra bit of commission for a job that is safely in their pockets. Don't fall for it. Tell them that the client can forget it then, and see how quickly the agent changes tack. They don't want to lose surefire money.

There are many good agencies around of course, and the good ones like the dodgy ones even less than you do. They get their industry a bad name, spoil their relationship with contractors, and take their business through unfair means.

Don't let them do it.


So how we can really trust when we send our CV that this is really reaching the Employer???

  • Uncle Sam, at that era, for sure was more sincere than the actual manning agencies. :-) Dear Captain, the shipping industry is under the management of 3 or 4 big manning agency that provide for personnel at all level. the problem is that....they use only the same "pot" where fish the name and the role required. This is right, i have a trust list and i use it...but...than...why post research of personnel, managers, when, 90% of the times, that research is only to show...that "i m working and i'm researching as per client required" But, usually, the client will receive the worker required choose ...in the own "pot". maybe, out of the pot...there are skilled workers that could provide ....really to satisfy the client in the best way... (but...nobody will call them....) Luciano Barbuti
