Dynamic Positioning Systems (DPS)

... An easy approach for getting into this system full of more systems

Defined as (Det Norske Veritas (DNV), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Lloyd’s Register (LRS or Lloyd’s) a vessel that maintains its position and heading (fixed location or pre-determined track) exclusively by means of active thrusters. This is obtained either by installing tunnel thrusters in addition to the main screw(s), or by using azimuthing thrusters, which can produce thrust in different directions. Dynamic positioning (DP) system also is known as thruster assisted posit...

Another interesting part to see , is that during the boom all the big suppliers focused on delivery. Now that the downturn happened, one can see alot of new products entering the market. Products that are likely to change alot of todays systems. One example is the Kongsberg seatex MGC , integrating gyrocompass with the motion reference unit. And how this can be used as inertial navigation with dgps. Hence rendering the use of expensive correction data, as it uses inertial navigation during bad dgps data.
