Just how eco-friendly are our new reefers?

GWP and R513A – the abbreviations almost sound a bit mysterious. Yet behind it lies a new refrigerant that Hapag-Lloyd is deploying in its own fleet of refrigerated containers (reefers) on a large scale – and thereby becoming the first carrier in the world to do so. Entering into service in the very near future will be a total of 1,000 reefers that are chilled by the environmentally friendly R513A refrigerant, which boasts a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 56 percent of the commonly used R134A refrigerant.

In its efforts to support the market adaptation of environmentally friendly refrigerants, Hapag-Lloyd is the first carrier to widely deploy the new low carbon refrigerant, as its manufacturer, Maersk Container Industry (MCI), has just announced. “Reducing carbon emissions is a key objective on our sustainability agenda”, said Frank Nachbar, Hapag-Lloyd’s Director Container Steering. “We believe in the potential of environmentally friendly refrigerants as an important element in achieving this.” Extensive tests with MCI, he added, have shown that the new refrigerant does not affect energy efficiency or cargo quality.

These 1,000 new boxes are part of a purchase of 3,700 “Star Cool Integrated” containers from MCI – and these, in turn, are part of the order of a total of 7,700 new reefers from various manufacturers that Hapag-Lloyd officially announced in mid-September.

What’s more, 1,000 of these boxes are equipped with “Controlled Atmosphere” (CA) technology, which will enable Hapag-Lloyd to expand its special “ExtraFresh” and “ExtraFresh Plus” products. The CA technology slows down the ripening process of various types of fruits and vegetables, thereby allowing them to be transported over longer periods of time and to reach their destination in optimal condition. “The CA technology makes it possible for even extremely sensitive fruits, such as blueberries and lychees, to be transported at the desired level of quality and degree of ripeness,” Nachbar said.
